Ipoh is the capital of Perak in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia, surrounded by limestone hills and a landscape shaped by the Kinta Valley. The city developed as a major center for tin mining, and remnants of that period remain visible in its historic buildings, streets, and former mining areas. Today, Ipoh combines a compact old town with newer commercial districts, while limestone formations rise around the city. The limestone hills around Ipoh contain caves, cliffs, forests, and distinctive karst formations. Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple is built within a large limestone cavern and includes gardens on the far side of the hill, while Sam Poh Tong occupies another cave complex south of the city. Gunung Lang Recreational Park combines limestone outcrops, lakes, and landscaped areas within an urban setting. Outside the city, the Kinta Nature Park provides wetland habitat for birds and other wildlife. The nearby Lost World of Tambun area is also known for hot springs and its limestone surroundings.

Ipoh is widely associated with its food, particularly dishes influenced by the city's Chinese-Malaysian communities. Ipoh white coffee is one of its best-known specialties, traditionally made from lightly roasted coffee beans and served with condensed milk. Local dishes include hor fun, flat rice noodles served in a clear chicken and prawn broth, as well as bean sprout chicken, which combines poached chicken with locally associated crunchy bean sprouts. Salted chicken is another regional specialty. The city's traditional coffee shops and hawker stalls remain important places for experiencing everyday food culture in the old town.
